Agents don't fit everywhere

Kevin Doran

Written in response to Bichen Wu’s LinkedIn post about the friction of personal agents.

I’ve been loving this latest round of models for coding.

But this is the other interesting argument against ai agents Age of Ultroning us: what if they just remain unremarkable for a large class of tasks, like ordering a coffee?

I’m finding JEV (and JEFF) are fun as hell for voice agents. They can help speed up navigating an app way better than the voice agents of 4 months ago.

Like the song “iplayyoulisten”, it’s made me wonder if the future of voice UX is that I speak commands but the computer doesn’t talk back, it just shows me visual confirmations. (Nothing gets the cortisol going like hearing a voice agent get confused.)

But, so often, it’s easier to just tap or click than to need to talk or type.

We developers are seeing huge advantages in voice input for coding.

But that doesn’t mean it fits everywhere. (Booking a flight… lol I’m sorry to those that built it, but have you SEEN how bad kayak’s agent is????)

Just like agents in general aren’t going to fit everywhere.

Big changes. Probably not in the ways we anticipate.

As a software developer, i keep catching myself trying to shove ai into places it doesn’t work.

Dev friends don’t let dev friends put math models in front of getting a coffee.

That’s the job
